What is FreezeSafe QR?
FreezeSafe QR is a remotely monitored, single-use freeze sensor that uses smart phone scanning to detect and report cold temperature excursions. It is a self-adhesive label with a color-changing indicator that visually shows whether a shipment has been exposed to unacceptably cold temperatures. When the FreezeSafe QR is scanned, sensor condition, time, date, location, serial number, and image evidence are uploaded to the SpotSee Cloud for review and tracking. FreezeSafe QR is commonly used in pharmaceutical cold chain logistics, life science shipments, and healthcare applications where protecting temperature-sensitive products from freezing is critical.
What is Freezesafe QR used for?
FreezeSafe QR temperature indicators are used to monitor and record whether a shipment or product has been exposed to unacceptably cold temperatures. They are commonly used for:
- Cold chain shipment monitoring
- Pharmaceutical and life science temperature compliance
- Package-level and item-level freeze detection
- Last-mile cold chain visibility
- Regulatory compliance and documentation (21 CFR Part 11)
- Warranty and quality control verification
FreezeSafe QR provides a simple, cost-effective way to verify that a shipment has not been exposed to freezing temperatures. The indicator responds to cumulative cold exposure over time and provides an immediate visual result, while QR scanning delivers automated cloud-based records without requiring a dedicated app.
How does Freezesafe QR work?
FreezeSafe QR senses the environmental temperature your shipment is exposed to. When temperatures drop below the stated activation threshold for a sufficient cumulative time, the indicator changes color — from light magenta to dark magenta, light blue to dark blue, or light grey to dark grey depending on the product. The recipient scans the QR code on the label with a smart phone, and real-time scan data — including condition status, time, date, and location — is sent to the SpotSee Cloud for shipper review.
Is the color change permanent?
Yes. Once the FreezeSafe QR indicator changes color due to cold temperature exposure, the change is permanent. This provides a reliable and irreversible visual record of temperature excursion for quality control, compliance documentation, and customer communication.
What color change occurs?
The color change depends on the product’s activation temperature threshold:
- 0°C, 2°C, and 5°C products: Light Pink to Magenta
- 10°C products: Light Blue to Dark Blue
- 15°C products: Light Grey to Dark Grey
If the circle on the label matches or is darker than the reference square, a temperature excursion has occurred (NOT OK). If the circle is lighter than the square, the shipment is OK.
What temperature thresholds are available?
FreezeSafe QR is available in the following temperature threshold options: 0°C (32°F), 2°C (36°F), 5°C (41°F), 10°C (50°F), and 15°C (59°F).
How accurate are Freezesafe QR labels?
FreezeSafe QR accuracy depends on the product shelf life:
- 1-Year products — 0°C, 2°C, 5°C: ±1°C (±2°F); 10°C, 15°C: ±2°C (±4°F)
- 2-Year products — 0°C: +1°C / -2°C; 2°C: +1°C / -2°C; 5°C: +1°C / -2.5°C; 10°C, 15°C: ±2°C
How quickly do Freezesafe QR labels activate?
Activation times are based on the cumulative time required at the lower tolerance of the stated threshold for a full color change:
- 0°C — 1-Year: Within 60 minutes; 2-Year: Within 120 minutes
- 2°C — 1-Year: Within 90 minutes; 2-Year: Within 120 minutes
- 5°C — Within 120 minutes (both 1-Year and 2-Year)
- 10°C — Within 120 minutes (both 1-Year and 2-Year)
- 15°C — Within 120 minutes (both 1-Year and 2-Year)
What size is Freezesafe QR?
FreezeSafe QR measures 1.22″ x 2.16″ (31mm x 55mm).
How do I use Freezesafe QR?
Apply the FreezeSafe QR label to your shipment before dispatch. The sensor continuously monitors environmental temperature. Upon receipt, the recipient scans the QR code with any smart phone camera — no dedicated app is required. The scan provides immediate on-screen condition information and simultaneously uploads the data to the SpotSee Cloud for shipper review and record-keeping.
Do I need a special app to scan FreezeSafe QR?
No. FreezeSafe QR is designed for use without a dedicated app. Any smart phone camera capable of reading QR codes can scan the label. This makes it accessible to all cold chain personnel, from the manufacturer all the way to the patient or end customer.
Can FreezeSafe QR be used at the individual item or package level?
Yes. Because FreezeSafe QR is a single-use, low-cost sensor that does not require a return program, it can be applied at the carton or individual item level. It can remain on the item all the way to the patient, providing complete package-level temperature visibility.
What surfaces can Freezesafe QR labels be applied to?
Yes. Because FreezeSafe QR is a single-use, low-cost sensor that does not require a return program, it can be applied at the carton or individual item level. It can remain on the item all the way to the patient, providing complete package-level temperature visibility.
What is the SpotSee Cloud?
SpotSee Cloud is a dedicated cloud platform designed for compatibility with low-cost, single-use temperature sensors used in life science cold chain applications. It allows shippers to track the temperature condition of critical and high-volume assets at each step in the cold chain, providing real-time insights down to the individual sensor and patient level.
What data is captured when FreezeSafe QR is scanned?
When the QR code is scanned, the following data is captured and uploaded to the SpotSee Cloud:
- Sensor condition (OK or NOT OK)
- Time and date of scan
- Location of scan
- Serial number of the sensor
- Image evidence
Is FreezeSafe QR compliant with regulatory requirements?
Yes. The SpotSee Cloud platform is built to comply with 21 CFR Part 11 record keeping and user access requirements, which govern electronic records and signatures in regulated industries such as pharmaceuticals and life sciences. 24/7 web-based access to shipment temperature condition data is available.
Can FreezeSafe QR help identify problem areas in my supply chain?
Yes. SpotSee Cloud provides high-level condition insights across all deployed sensors, allowing shippers to remotely identify, analyze, and improve problem areas or lanes in the cold chain. The dashboard displays aggregate data including excursion rates, heat maps, and individual sensor history.
How should FreezeSafe QR labels be stored?
Store unused FreezeSafe QR labels away from direct light at 25°C / 77°F or below.
What is the shelf life of FreezeSafe QR?
FreezeSafe QR has a shelf life of 2 years when stored under recommended conditions.
