Irreversible thermochromic ink is a high temperature activated ink that changes color permanently once it crosses a set activation point. Unlike reversible thermochromic ink, the color change cannot reset, making it a reliable, one time visual record that a heat threshold was reached.

What Is Irreversible Thermochromic Ink?

SpotSee’s irreversible thermochromic ink is a colorless to color, water based Screen or Flexo ink or pigment activated by high heat. Once the ink crosses its rated temperature, the color change is permanent and becomes denser as the temperature climbs further, giving a clear, tamper evident signal that a heat threshold was reached.

How Irreversible Thermochromic Ink Works

These aqueous concentrates combine three core components: leuco dyes, color developers, and melt materials. The blend is micronized to reduce particle size, then carried in a water based system that stays off white until heat pushes it past its activation point, at which stage it locks into color permanently.

This is different from reversible thermochromic ink, which uses leuco dyes that shift color back and forth as temperature fluctuates rather than staying fixed. For a closer look at how leuco dyes behave in reversible formulations, see our thermochromic leuco dye page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is irreversible thermochromic ink the same as leuco dye?

No. Leuco dyes are one ingredient inside the ink formulation. In irreversible thermochromic ink, leuco dyes are combined with color developers and melt materials so the color change locks in permanently once activated. Leuco dyes on their own are more commonly used in reversible, cycling color change products.

Can irreversible thermochromic ink change back to its original color?

No. That is the defining feature. Once the ink is activated above its rated temperature, the color change is permanent and cannot revert, even after cooling.

What temperature does irreversible thermochromic ink activate at?

SpotSee’s irreversible thermochromic ink activates between 60°C and 200°C depending on the formulation selected.
